In Hungarian music, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated by it that I decided to give it a new life. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 16th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style, mostly in tablature, as was commonly made between the l4th and l8ème century.
As in other similar works of mine, I was led by a dual purpose: to cast the brief musical works, which arc valuable to us though at first glance seem insignificant, into a larger musical form; and also to ennoble the crude, dilettante pieces with richer but stylistically tasteful harmonies, and contrapuntal texture.
I composed my "Partita all'ungaresca” in 1974 for the Vác Musica Humana Ensemble. Two years later, I adapted it for the Berner Bläseroktett conducted by my son András and gave it a new title: Contrafacta Hungarica.
